The U.S. Navy (USN) is the naval warfare service and seaborne branch of the United States Armed Forces and one of the seven uniformed services of the United States. The Department of the Navy is a division of the Department of Defense, headed by the Secretary of Defense.  The branch was founded in October of 1775.

The mission of the Navy is to maintain, train and equip combat-ready Naval forces capable of winning wars, deterring aggression and maintaining freedom of the seas. The preparation of naval forces necessary for the effective prosecution of war. Their motto reads: Honor, Courage, Commitment.

 

The U.S. Navy is the largest, most skilled navy in the world. The Navy has the highest combined battle fleet tonnage. The U.S. Navy also has the world’s largest aircraft carrier fleet. Ten are in service and two are in the reserve fleet.

The size, complexity, and global presence of the Navy requires a large number of bases. While the majority of bases are located inside the United States itself, the navy maintains bases abroad, either in U.S.-controlled territories or in foreign countries.

The service has 328,194 personnel on active duty and 101,199 in the Navy Reserve. It has 272 deployable combat vessels and more than 3,700 aircraft in active service as of 2016. All members of the Navy and Navy Reserve are Sailors. Sailors are classified as either Enlisted or Officer.

Enlisted Sailors

Enlisted Sailors are the general workforce of the Navy and Navy Reserve and make up the majority of personnel. Enlisted Sailors hold hundreds of positions in dozens of different career and job areas. Through education and/or experience, Enlisted Sailors have the opportunity to become Commissioned Officers.

Commissioned Officers

Commissioned Officers are members of the Navy or Navy Reserve who have a degree from a four-year college or university as a minimum educational requirement and have gone through Officer Training or have extensive service experience.

Commissioned Officers are the leadership and management team of the Navy and Navy Reserve. They also hold positions in dozens of different career and job areas.
