If you suffer from a service-related disability, you may be entitled to compensation. The three main types of compensation are Disability Compensation, Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) and Special Monthly Compensation (SMC). The VA also provides additional housing and insurance benefits to Veterans with disabilities. Adapted Housing grants, Service-Disable Veterans’ Insurance, and Veterans’ Mortgage Life Insurance are available for qualifying Veterans. For more information contact one of our representatives today.
Disability Compensation is granted to Veterans with disabilities whose injury or disease is a result of their military service. Post-service disabilities may also be granted if the disease or injury is secondary to those in service or are circumstances of military service. Disability compensation is monetary and tax free.
The benefit amount is derived from the degree of the Veteran’s disability ranging from 10 percent to 100 percent. Disability is measured in increments of 10 percent. Benefits are also designed to compensate for loss of working time from relapses or illnesses.
If you claim dependents, additional benefits may be added if your disability is rated 30 percent or greater. Compensation may vary if you receive military retirement pay, disability severance pay or separation incentive payments.
Dependency and Indemnity Compensation
Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) is granted to spouses, children or parents of service members who died in active duty, active/inactive duty for training or survivors or Veterans who died from service-connected disabilities. Parents receive benefits based on income. DIC is monetary and tax free.
Special Monthly Compensation
Special Monthly Compensation (SMC) is a higher rate of compensation that may be granted for Veterans for special circumstances such as the need of a caregiver or a specific disability, such as loss of use of a hand or leg. For spouses and surviving spouses, this is commonly referred to as aid and attendance and is paid based on need for both services. SMC is monetary and tax free.
